Media Statement on the Engineers and Geoscientists British Columbia Disciplinary Findings

Vancouver, BC – Michael Goehring, President and CEO of the Mining Association of British Columbia (MABC) made the following statement on the Engineers and Geoscientists British Columbia (EGBC) news release on disciplinary findings against two individuals connected with the 2014 breach of the tailings storage facility at the Mount Polley Mine:

“MABC is confident in EGBC’s Discipline Hearing Panel process and findings. In recent years, significant changes have been made to the Mines Act, the Health, Safety and Reclamation Code for Mines, and BC’s and water quality guidelines, in addition to new legal requirements for tailings dam construction and management. The provincial government’s Chief Mines Auditor released an audit in June that determined BC’s tailings dam regulations are now among the best in the world. MABC and our members will continue to work alongside government regulators to implement the audit’s recommendations.
