Each year the Mining Association of BC publicly recognizes an individual who has shown outstanding leadership advancing and promoting the mining industry in areas of innovation, safety, sustainable development, and corporate social responsibility within British Columbia.
Marcia Smith, Teck Resources
On behalf of the Association’s board and membership, MABC is pleased to announce Marcia Smith, Senior Vice President, Sustainability and External Affairs of Teck Resources, as the 2020 Mining Person of the Year.
The Mining Person of the Year award honors Marcia’s substantial contribution in shaping Teck’s approach to sustainability and ESG performance, as well as her leadership in championing responsible mining and social and environmental sustainability within British Columbia and across the Canadian and global mining sectors.
Well before the current focus on ESG, Marcia worked to embed sustainable business practices and continuous improvement in environmental, social and governance performance within Teck to generate greater value for shareholders and society-at-large. The company has been positioned at the forefront of global sustainability indices and set ambitious sustainability goals, including being carbon neutral across its operations by 2050. Teck was the only mining and metals company awarded the S&P Gold Class Award in 2020. In 2019 and 2020, Teck became the top-ranked mining company on both the World and North American Dow Jones Sustainability Index and is the top-ranked mining company on numerous other key ESG rankings.
